ZOOM - video conferencing tool

Using Zoom Many teachers will use Microsoft Teams as their primary way of communicating with classes. Zoom is another common method of conference calling, and it enables you to see multiple users at one time (not just 4 as in Teams). The huge increase in the use of Zoom during lockdown has seen a number of negative media articles about the platform, so if you use it please do so mindfully.

1. Refer to the safety guidelines to be aware of zoombombing and privacy concerns that are listed at the end of this section.

2. Have a practice with some friends / colleagues before you go live with a class

3. Be aware of what is in your background!

4. Set up a Zoom account using your school email, so that any private use and school use are completely separate.

5. Do not record Zoom meetings. In settings ensure that the ‘Recording Option’ is turned off.

6. Do not allow students to record the meetings / lessons.

7. Do not meet with students 1:1 – it should only be in a class / group setting.

8. Make sure you use the Settings, to give yourself total control of the meeting,
   a. Only the teacher may ‘host’ a meeting.
   b. Do not allow participants to ‘join before host’ – you have to be there first.
   c. Use a waiting room
   d. Password protect your meeting – unless you choose otherwise this will be automatically be part of an invite that you send via email
   e. Everyone is muted on entry
   f. Chat is only between students and teacher. Turn on ‘prevent participants from saving chat’ and make sure that ‘Private chat’ is turned off.
   g. Turn off ‘File transfer’
   h. Unless you are an expert at Zoom, make sure functions like Whiteboard, Remote control, Breakout Room etc are turned off.

9. Remember you can stop the meeting at any time.

What is Zoom-bombing?Zoom-bombing is the term for when individuals "gate-crash" Zoom meetings. These uninvited guests share their screens to bombard real attendees with disturbing pornographic and/or violent imagery. Most of these are perpetrated via publicly available Zoom links; however, not all depending on your settings. Here are ways to protect you and your guests from falling victim.

Here is an article which explains several ways when using Zoom to prevent this
It is extremely important to read this if you are using Zoom
